Louis Vierne – Gargouilles et Chiméres (op. 55)
Gargouilles et Chiméres – á mon éléve Georges Ibos, Organiste de Saint-Honoré d’Eylau á Paris “Poco lento in F sharp minor and 4/4 time. This wonderful piece, a depiction of grinning gargoyles and mythical monsters, may be subdivided into various short sections. First of all one hears the Clarinette in the low register alternating with the Quintaton in chromatically ascending harmonies. This element reappears throughout the entire piece as a sort of refrain. In between there follow in varying colours a merry Allegro, an Allegretto con moto in 6/8 time and an Allegretto marcato. Finally the Allegretto con moto appears once more, bringing this bizarre piece to a close.” (Ben van Oosten) Ben van Oosten Cavaillé-Coll-Organ Saint-Ouen, Rouen
